SigEx Telecom : Giant companies care about our privacy?
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Microsoft seems to care about the privacy of its clients more than ever. After purchasing the $6 billion aQuantative- which owns interactive ad agency Avenue A RazorFish, as well as Atlas, a set of advanced tools for advertisers and publishers, and DrivePM- according to eweek.com, Microsoft is following Google's steps by announcing that it will anonymize search query data after 18 months with the permanent removal of cookie IDs, entire IP addresses or other identifiers from search terms. Google recently announced that cookies will automatically expire after two years. Brendon Lynch, Microsoft's director of privacy strategy declared for eweek.com that the company is taking these steps because they feel "it's the right time to provide more insight regarding what our practices are for our customers. This is being debated right now. This is about us describing what we're doing in this world." He also said consumers want the best of both worlds: free, personalized services, along with their privacy protected. Some voices say all this talk about protecting our privacy is actually an intelligent move to give people confidence without the companies really having anything to do. Who knows? Perhaps this is what's really happening. After all NSA is listening to our phones and many of us aren't really fond of this idea, it is a great PR move to announce that Microsoft, Google or whoever are respecting our privacy and aren't keeping records of our searches, our IP addresses and so on. I really tend to believe this idea more than the one with the honest and concerned giant companies who care about our privacy.
