SigEx Telecom : Go Wikia!
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Something very interesting will happen in a few months. I'm sure you've used Wikipedia, but have you ever contributed with information to help it become even greater? "When I opened Wikipedia with only three articles in it, it was a pretty bad encyclopedia," Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia said. Now Wikipedia is a vast source of information thanks to volunteers from around the globe. Wikia Inc. is now developing an important project: developing an open-source search engine. The project got a boost recently thanks to the acquisition of the Grub distributed Web crawler. Wikipedia's founder and Wikia co-founder said the search engine won't be great in the begining, but Wikipedia wasn't either and look at it now. Wikia will provide in a short time a better web search experience, totally different from Google, Yahoo or Microsoft. It is not very clear yet if Wikia will provide general Web search or it will have special engines for news, images and videos as well. As expected many organizations are very interested in the project and are confident that Wikia Search can compete with Google. I am also confident and can't wait to leave Google for good and use and help Wikia. It's a great concept, a different company from Google with other business philosophies. Some voices say this will be a good thing for Google because it will serve them well to have different players around and still be the ad broker for everyone. Nevertheless I just can't wait to get up in the morning, grab a cup of coffee, open my computer, open a web page and see another logo, different from Google's.

SigEx Telecom : Giant companies care about our privacy?
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Microsoft seems to care about the privacy of its clients more than ever. After purchasing the $6 billion aQuantative- which owns interactive ad agency Avenue A RazorFish, as well as Atlas, a set of advanced tools for advertisers and publishers, and DrivePM- according to eweek.com, Microsoft is following Google's steps by announcing that it will anonymize search query data after 18 months with the permanent removal of cookie IDs, entire IP addresses or other identifiers from search terms. Google recently announced that cookies will automatically expire after two years. Brendon Lynch, Microsoft's director of privacy strategy declared for eweek.com that the company is taking these steps because they feel "it's the right time to provide more insight regarding what our practices are for our customers. This is being debated right now. This is about us describing what we're doing in this world." He also said consumers want the best of both worlds: free, personalized services, along with their privacy protected. Some voices say all this talk about protecting our privacy is actually an intelligent move to give people confidence without the companies really having anything to do. Who knows? Perhaps this is what's really happening. After all NSA is listening to our phones and many of us aren't really fond of this idea, it is a great PR move to announce that Microsoft, Google or whoever are respecting our privacy and aren't keeping records of our searches, our IP addresses and so on. I really tend to believe this idea more than the one with the honest and concerned giant companies who care about our privacy.

SigEx Telecom : Hello?Anybody there?NSA...
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

IIt's so easy to communicate through a cellphone and cellphone usage is variably higher than home phone usage. We should expect the next few weeks to see in the spotlight the largest phone carriers and it's very easy to understand why. The NSA with the help of the largest phone providers has been analyzing the phone records of nearly every American since the terrible event from 9/11, hoping to detect calling patterns indicative of terrorists. AT&T, BellSouth and Verizon agreed to offer NSA all their phone records helping this way to create the largest database in the world. NSA's goal is "to create a database of every call ever made"- said an anonymous source of USA Today's. I think it's really very scary to know that everything you say, every friend you have, every address or phone number you know, every "I love you" you say are somewhere in a database. I understand why the NSA is doing this but I can't help to be creped out. They already have a window in every American's communication habits. Perhaps Qwest wasn't wrong to refuse NSA's offer. If you read the "Questions and answers about the NSA phone record collection program" in the USA Today I think you'll ask yourself some questions to. Let's suppose you agree with being listened and then you're curious to find out what They have been listening to. You can't find out because :"No. The NSA's work is secret, and the agency won't publicly discuss its operations." Something even stranger is that They can't even say if what they're doing is legal. They call it "a matter of debate". To enclose, even if you're calling your fellow terrorist friend to go out for a cup of coffee, or you're calling your grandmother to see how she's doing, there's someone listening to you very careful...

SigEx Telecom : Gigantilor Microsoft si Google le pasa de intimitatea noastra?
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

SigEx Telecom :SAP has agreed to include data federation tools from Informatica
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Data federation tools from Informatica with some of enterprise resource planning and analytics products, was agreed to be included by SAP. Customers will be helped analyzing data stored in third-party or legacy systems by the combination of the two products.A marketing problem for SAP is also solved as the applications from Informatica will help the company sell into larger enterprises with heterogeneous environments.SAP will embed Informatica's PowerCenter, PowerExchange and Metadata Manager software into its performance management and business analytic applications and the NetWeaver platform for master data management and business intelligence, under the terms of their agreement. These are among SAP's fastest growing products, reflecting a trend towards greater data volumes and increased fragmentation of data sources, noted Michael Pickett, vice president of global alliances at Informatica, based in Redwood City, Calif.Larger companies with disparate systems, particularly ones which have added software over the course of several years, have to overcome the hurdle of being able to correlate isolated data stores in meaningful ways. Pickett told eWEEK that SAP`s software is allowed to be"substantially augmented by being able to access data that might be in other systems,by the Informatica applications."
